Enfield Citadel Band was founded in Tottenham, north London, in 1892, and soon established a reputation as one of the Salvation Army's leading musical groups. In 1972, with the merging of two Salvation Army corps, the band moved to Enfield, on the outskirts of north London, and assumed its present title. There, as before, the band's principal purpose has remained - to proclaim the Gospel message within the corps and in open-air activities in the same way as Salvation Army bands throughout the world.
In addition to service within its own locality, Enfield Citadel Band travels extensively
to present its ministry in music making. It has performed in most of the major concert
venues in the British Isles and has shared programmes with some of the leading contesting
bands including Black Dyke, Fairey FP (Music) and Fodens.
Visits to Sweden, Norway, Denmark,
Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the USA have also been
undertaken. Enfield Citadel Band is also regularly involved in broadcasting and recording
activities: a number of recent recordings are
available now.
The band is led by Bandmaster Andrew Blyth who is Assistant Territorial Music Director for the Salvation Army's UK Territory. He was appointed in October 2005 in succession to the legendary James Williams MBE who served in that position with such distinction for over 40 years.
A wide range of professions are represented by the band's members: from accountants to architects, civil servants to salesmen. But all are united by the desire to use their talents in the Lord's service and to fulfil the band's motto:
Ad Optimum - To The Highest
The programme from the band's recent visit to Northampton is now available to view from the Events page. This event was organised by Natacha Rogers, a young Salvationist who is celebrating seven years since having a heart and lung transplant, to raise funds for the Harefield Hospital Transplant Unit. A great evening for a very worthwhile cause.
The programme, photographs and video clips from the band's recent visit to Consett are now available. See the Events page for further details. Video clips from the bandstand programme are available on YouTube.
Also available from the Events page are programmes and reviews from the band's engagements throughout the spring. Programmes, news and reviews from the band's 2007 events, including the band's seven day tour of the USA east coast, are available to view from the Events archive page.
Information on all the band's engagements through to the end of 2008 is available from the Events page. News of this year's Annual Pre-Contest Festival coming soon.
