Enfield Citadel Band was founded in Tottenham, north London, in 1892, and soon established a reputation as one of the Salvation Army's leading musical groups. In 1972, with the merging of two Salvation Army corps, the band moved to Enfield, on the outskirts of north London, and assumed its present title. There, as before, the band's principal purpose has remained - to proclaim the Gospel message within the corps and in open-air activities in the same way as Salvation Army bands throughout the world.
In addition to service within its own locality, Enfield Citadel Band travels extensively
to present its ministry in music making. It has performed in most of the major concert
venues in the British Isles and has shared programmes with some of the leading contesting
bands including Black Dyke, Fairey's and Foden's.
Visits to Sweden, Norway, Denmark,
Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the USA have also been
undertaken. Enfield Citadel Band is also regularly involved in broadcasting and recording
activities: a number of recent recordings are
available now.
The band has been led by a number of leading Salvation Army musicians through the years, including the legendary Bandmaster James Williams MBE who served in that position with such distinction for over 40 years. The band is currently led by Jonathan Corry who was commissioned bandmaster in January 2009.
A wide range of professions are represented by the band's members: from accountants to architects, civil servants to salesmen. But all are united by the desire to use their talents in the Lord's service and to fulfil the band's motto:
Ad Optimum - To The Highest
The band is preparing for a new local outreach with a special Classical Summer Proms evening at the Broxbourne Civic Hall on Sunday 12th July. The event will feature the band, a festival chorus of over 100 voices, guest soloists and an indoor fireworks finale. Don't miss this special event. For further information, download the poster opposite or see the Events page.
The band has successfully completed a four day visit to Norway. During the trip, the band played in Oslo, Lillehammer (pictured right) and Trondheim. A tour diary is available to view here with photos available in the Picture Gallery (new pictures added). Other information about the trip and the rest of the band's programme for 2009 is available from the Events page.
Programmes, reviews and photographs from the band's 2008 events are available to view from the Events archive page.
Enfield Citadel Band is delighted to be featuring Rath trombones as the preferred instrument of choice for their trombone section. According to Band Secretary and bass trombone player Stuart Horton, "Rath's ability to adapt their range of options to meet almost any requirement from a group of players with different approaches to their playing has been a key part in our decision to use them. With over twenty years experience playing together as a section, we know what we want to achieve. When it came to changing our instruments, Rath's professional response has helped us maintain the level of playing, both solo and ensemble, that our section has become known for within brass band circles."
Tenor trombones used by the Enfield section are R4s, with the R9 bass trombone. Variations in slides, bell materials and finish, leadpipes, mouthpieces and cases have all been accommodated within the Rath system.
